At Brookhaven, we believe music and media provide powerful opportunities for self-expression, communication and confidence-building — supporting learners to engage creatively while developing skills that promote wellbeing, collaboration and independence.
Music & Media Curriculum Intent Statement
Our Music and Media curriculum is inclusive, practical and aspirational. Learning is adapted to meet individual needs, ensuring all students can access and enjoy music and media in ways that are meaningful and achievable.
Music lessons are delivered in partnership with Anthem Music, who provide specialist teachers with professional expertise and experience of working in educational settings. Anthem Music specialists work closely with Brookhaven staff to ensure learning is tailored to learners' individual needs, communication styles and sensory profiles.
Curriculum Overview
Music and Media learning includes hands-on opportunities across a range of creative disciplines, with content delivered through activities that prioritise engagement, enjoyment and skill development:
- Performing, composing and listening to music
- Rhythm, pitch, dynamics and structure
- Music technology and recording
- Media including sound, video and digital content
- Creative choice-making and personal response
Learning is linked to EHCP outcomes and individual targets, ensuring relevance and accessibility for every learner across both pathways.
Vocational Pathway
Focus on practical music-making, teamwork and responding to creative briefs. Students have opportunities to explore music and media in real-world contexts, including performance, recording and production.
Independence Pathway
Sensory-informed sessions focusing on exploration, repetition and routine. Emphasis on participation, confidence and communication through music and media experiences.
Specialist teaching, structured routines and a focus on personal achievement ensure every student can succeed and thrive in Music and Media.
Teaching, Learning & Assessment
Lessons are carefully structured with clear routines, modelling and visual support. Specialist teachers adapt pace, content and outcomes to suit individual learners. Progress is recognised through Brookhaven Steps, celebrating engagement, skill development and personal achievement rather than comparison. Student voice is valued — learners are supported to express preferences and reflect on their experiences.
Music, Media & Wellbeing
Music and Media play an important role in supporting emotional expression and regulation, confidence and self-esteem, communication and social interaction, and positive engagement and enjoyment of learning. Creative success is celebrated and shared across the school community.
Brookhaven's Music and Media provision is strengthened through specialist teaching, strong partnerships and SEND-informed practice. By working with Anthem Music and tailoring learning to individual needs, we ensure every learner can access meaningful, enjoyable and confidence-building creative experiences.
