At Brookhaven, our Food Technology curriculum empowers students with essential life skills — cultivating independence, promoting healthy lifestyles, and preparing them for meaningful futures through hands-on, practical learning.

Food Technology Curriculum Intent Statement

At Brookhaven, our Food Technology curriculum is designed to empower students with the essential life skills needed to thrive both in and beyond the classroom. We believe that learning about food is not just about cooking — it is about cultivating independence, promoting healthy lifestyles, and preparing students for meaningful futures.

Through engaging, hands-on experiences, students develop a deep understanding of food safety and hygiene, nutrition, and the social and cultural significance of food. Our curriculum encourages learners to make informed choices, follow instructions with precision, and build confidence in their ability to manage everyday tasks. Whether preparing a simple meal or exploring the science behind ingredients, students gain practical skills that support their personal development and future aspirations.

Food Technology at Brookhaven also plays a vital role in developing employment-based competencies. Students learn to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and solve problems creatively — skills that are essential in any workplace. The curriculum is inclusive and responsive, offering differentiated learning experiences across three distinct pathways to ensure every student can succeed.

Our Food Technology provision is tailored across KS3 and KS4 to meet the needs of students on each pathway — from GCSE preparation and vocational readiness through to everyday independence and community engagement.

Vocational Pathway

Students on the Vocational Pathway follow a structured curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum and qualifications, with the option to complete the OCR GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition. The focus is on academic rigour and skill mastery, with opportunities to explore food science, nutrition, and advanced cooking techniques. Learners develop analytical thinking and technical precision, preparing them for further education and careers in hospitality, catering, or health sciences.

The Vocational Pathway offers a practical, hands-on approach to learning. Students gain real-world experience in food preparation, kitchen safety, and customer service. The curriculum emphasises teamwork, communication, and resilience, equipping learners with the confidence and competence to pursue apprenticeships, employment, or further vocational training in food-related industries.

Independence Pathway

For students on the Independence Pathway, Food Technology is a gateway to greater autonomy and community engagement. The curriculum focuses on everyday life skills such as meal planning, budgeting, and safe food handling. Lessons are designed to support participation in sport and community-based learning, helping students build routines, regulate emotions, and contribute meaningfully to their environments.

The emphasis is on personal growth, self-care, and preparing for adulthood with dignity and confidence.
